🏖️
Ureki is a small resort town on Georgia's Black Sea coast, about 20 km from Poti and 100 km from Batumi. What makes it completely unique is its black sand — dark, fine, and naturally magnetic due to high concentrations of magnetite.
WHY THE SAND IS BLACK AND MAGNETIC
The black volcanic sand of Ureki is rich in magnetite (Fe₃O₄), a naturally occurring iron oxide mineral. When you hold a magnet near the sand, it pulls the dark grains right to it. Locals have long believed the magnetic sand has therapeutic properties — it is said to improve circulation and help with joint conditions. While scientific evidence is limited, thousands of visitors return every year for the experience.
The sand is also noticeably warmer than white sand beaches. On a hot summer day, the black sand absorbs more heat from the sun, creating a natural warming effect that many guests find therapeutic for tired muscles.
WHAT TO DO IN UREKI
The beach itself is the main attraction. The Black Sea here is calm and relatively shallow near the shore, making it ideal for families with children. The water temperature in summer reaches 24–26°C.
Beyond the beach:
- Walk the seafront promenade, lined with cafes and souvenir shops
- Visit the pine forests just behind the beach — perfect for an evening walk
- Day trip to Kolkheti National Park (20 km north), a wetland reserve with rare bird species
- Day trip to Batumi (100 km south) for the city's botanical garden and old town
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The season runs from mid-June to mid-September. July and August are peak months with the warmest water and most activity. June and September are quieter, less crowded, and better value.
